PIRACY at sea
Chair: TAYLOR SINGH
Co-Chair: TOMMY WEI
Crisis Expert: ATTICUS RADWELL
This committee is focusing on piracy, which is defined as, “
-
“ any illegal acts of violence or detention, or any act of depredation, committed for private ends by the crew or the passengers of a private ship or a private aircraft, and directed:
(i). on the high seas, against another ship or aircraft, or against persons or property on board such ship or aircraft;
(ii). against a ship, aircraft, persons or property in a place outside the jurisdiction of any State;
-
any act of voluntary participation in the operation of a ship or of an aircraft with knowledge of facts making it a pirate ship or aircraft;
-
any act of inciting or of intentionally facilitating an act described in subparagraph (a) or (b).”
As this definition demonstrates, piracy is a serious and costly issue that harms millions of dollars worth of ships, aircrafts, and property and more importantly jeopardizes hundreds of people’s lives. Even though there have been efforts to combat it by leading organizations like INTERPOL and the UN Security Council, pirates have always remained one step ahead. This is the mission for delegates: to come up with new solutions and international alliances so that the threats of piracy can at last be a thing of the past.
