LEGALIZATION OF PROSTITUTION

Chairs: SOPHIE GILSTEN
Co-Chair: ROHAN MODY
Crisis Expert: ELLA HAWKINS

Commonly considered the world's oldest profession, the debate over the legality of prostitution has long been prevalent. Prostitution and sex work in general has deep-rooted ties to sexism, racism, classism, and more. Despite it's long standing history in our world, prostitution is still looked down on, criminalized, and considered dirty or wrong. However, by criminalizing prostitution it allows for criminals to run it. Political systems worldwide need to think about the harm being done to individuals enveloped in this lifestyle and whether or not these laws are actually to protect them, or are they part of an archaic system designed to penalize women. In this committee we will investigate the disconnect between the actual profession of prostitution and the issues that constantly surround it. You will be tasked with figuring out how to combat these issues and how changing different aspects of the legality of prostitution will improve or worsen both the quality of life for sex workers and its ties to the criminal underworld.
